Who can take part in the “red dot award: communication design”?
Designers, agencies, design companies and clients of communication design works
from all around the world are invited to take part in the competition. All kinds of
commissioned communication design works of any design technique can be
entered, provided they have been realised within the period ranging from 01 January 2004 to 01 July 2006. Each entrant can register an unlimited number of entries.
Who can take part in the “red dot: junior award”?
The “red dot: junior award” is part of the “red dot award: communication design” and is aimed at students and young designers from all around the world.
Participants of the “red dot: junior award” receive a 50% discount on the registration fees, but not on return shipment or technology fees.
The following special requirements have to be fulfilled in order to take part in the “red dot: junior award”:
The entrant is a university student or a young professional up to three years after completing their diploma. Furthermore, the entrant is the creator of the submitted work.
There is a separate online registration for the “red dot: junior award”.
When does the registration period end?
Early Bird: by 12 May 2006 Early entrants pay a reduced registration fee (this does not apply to entries for the “red dot: junior award”).
Junior Award Discount Participants of the “red dot: junior award” receive a 50% discount on registration and yearbook-entry fees.
Registration deadline: 16 June 2006 Registration deadline and delivery for late applications: 30 June 2006 All late applications incur an additional 25 euro handling fee in addition to the registration fee.
Informations 1 red dot award: communication design 2006 reddot design award Can I send in several exhibits (= parts) for one entry?
One entry can consist of several exhibits (= parts). These exhibits must clearly belong to the submitted work.
The application fee is calculated based on the number of submitted exhibits.

Who are the jury members?
Only international experts who have not submitted any works themselves can be appointed to the jury of the red dot design award. The jury changes every year. For the period of several days the jury examines each entry and weighs up critically whether the decisive requirements for receiving an award have been fulfilled.
What are the jury’s evaluation criteria?
The quality of the competition is not only a result of the adjudication rules, but above all of the strict application of these rules. Therefore the jury of the red dot design award guarantees not only high-class expertise but also absolute independence.
Originality – Is the work new, innovative?
Transparency – Is the work easily understandable?
Workmanship – Is the work or high quality, for example with regards to design, workmanship, choice and use of materials?
Depending on their applicability on the submitted work, the following criteria will
also be included in the evaluation:
Animating quality User friendliness Architecture Recognisability Description of the submitted work: what details are necessary, how long can the descriptions be and how do I send the description?
The description of your work will be divided up into three essential parts which you will be asked to enter directly during the online registration. Each question can be
answered with a maximum of 600 characters including blanks:
1. A short description of the task
2. A short description of the solution
3. Only applicable for TV and Cinema advertising films or radio advertisements: a short description of the content
Does every entrant receive an invoice?
Each entrant receives an invoice for registration fees for participating in the competition. The invoice will be sent to the contact person given in the online registration.
What can I win in the red dot design award?
Selecting An international and independent expert jury evaluates the design quality of each submitted product. The evaluation criteria for qualifying are explained in detail in the respective menu item.
Qualifying In the “red dot award: communication design” works of high design quality will be awarded the “red dot” quality label. The best products of each category receive the “red dot: best of the best” for highest design quality.
Presenting The red dot design award offers companies and designers an important marketing instrument to communicate their quality to customers, consumers and clients.
Additionally, all products will be presented in the red dot communication design yearbook 2006/2007, in the red dot design portal “www.red-dot.de” and the red dot design museum.
All “red dot: best of the best” award-winners and the winners of the special prizes will personally receive their certificates on stage in front of some 1,000 guests at the festive awards presentation in the Essen Philharmonic Concert Hall on 08 December 2006. All other red dot award-winners will receive their certificates afterwards during the Late Night Party in the red dot design museum.
When and for how long can the winner logo be used?
The winner logo can be used in your communication in connection with the awardwinning work immediately after you have received your winning notification. The duration of use is not restricted to a certain time period.

Informations 3 red dot award: communication design 2006 reddot design award When am I allowed to publish my award?
In order to guarantee a uniform communication of the results of the “red dot award: communication design 2006”, we will ask you to wait until the 31 July 2006 before you make your award public. By then we will have informed the press about the results of the current competition.
However, should you already have planned important trade fair appearances or presentations before this date then you will be more than welcome to communicate your distinction with the “red dot” quality label for these purposes.

This year, we have lowered the registration fee for the “red dot award:
communication design” in the categories Advertising, Corporate Design, Packaging Design, Editorial and Poster. There is still a fee payable for each individual exhibit, which means that the registration fee is scaled according to the number of exhibits as soon as an entry consists of more than one part.
Category 1 Corporate Design, 3 Advertising, 4 Packaging Design, 5 Editorial, 6 Poster A fee is payable for every single exhibit (= part). In other words, the registration fee for the simultaneous registration of more than one exhibit (= parts) is differentiated according to the number of exhibits.
Technology fee If a technical device is required for the presentation of your entry, an additional technology fee of 80 euros will apply.
The fee for the categories Public Space, Interactive Media, TV & Cinema, and Sound
Design has increased slightly due to higher administration costs:
Category 2 Informational Design/Public Space, 7 Interactive Media, 8 TV & Cinema, 9 Sound Design
All prices are subject to statutory VAT. Since the venue of competition is Germany, entries from both Germany and abroad are subject to value-added tax. The registration fees already include VAT at the statutory rate of 16%. Competitors for the “red dot: junior prize” receive a 50% discount on the applicable registration and technical fees; the fee for return shipment is payable in full.
If the entrant receives an award this results in a contractual relationship on the basis of which the participant is obliged to pay certain fees.
Conditions of participation Eligibility requirements Designers, agencies, design companies and clients of commissioned communication design works from all around the world are invited to participate in the competition.
All kinds of commissioned communication design works in any design technique can be submitted, provided they have been realised between 01 January 2004 and 01 July 2006. Each entrant can submit an unlimited number of works.
Marketing services If your work receives the internationally recognised “red dot” label there will be different ways to take advantage of this distinction and to inform your customers
Special exhibition in the red dot design museum The winning works of the “red dot award: communication design” will be presented to the public in a special exhibition in the red dot design museum for a fee. The awards presentation on 08 December 2006 marks the beginning of the special exhibition. Following the special exhibition, the winning works of the “red dot: best of the best”, “red dot: grand prix” and “red dot: junior prize” will be presented in the red dot design museum for one year.
Yearbook entry If you win an award in the “red dot award: communication design” competition, subject to a fee, your award-winning work will be presented in the red dot communication design yearbook 2006/2007 on at least 1/1 page. Winners of the “red dot: best of the best”, “red dot: grand prix” and “red dot: junior prize” will be presented exclusively on 2/1 pages.
The standard work does not only reflect the visually impressive results of the renowned competition, but also brings together the current trends in analogue and digital communication design in a fascinating compendium. The official publication date is 08 December 2006. You will receive a specimen copy directly after completion.
Internet entry Each award-winning work of the “red dot award: communication design 2006” will be presented on the “red dot online” website for the duration of one year, with an option of extension. The costs are included in the yearbook entry costs. The red dot online portal (www.red-dot.de) is one of the most visited, most renowned and most interesting communication platforms in the world. It is a worldwide research tool as well as a source of inspiration for architects, companies, designers, design companies and consumers. In addition, clients and designers of the current competition year will be displayed in a clear index; a banner will be created for each work which will promote the winners on the online pages.
Further tools such as the presentation of the agency profile or the client profile and suggestions for design news can also be used.
