Oktober 2013 “Ethics and Organizational Sustainability - How ethics can threaten or boost resilience” Robert C. Chandler, Ph.D.

Director of the Nicholson School of Communication, University of Central Florida FR, 10 October 2014 15:30 – 16:15 h, AUDIMAX FH Salzburg Abstract “Ethics” and “sustainability” discussions often center on practices that affect the earth’s environment, or on specifics such as maintaining labor relations. However, an organization’sethics actually have the potential to destroy or preserve the existence of the organization itself. In recent years, ethical misconduct disasters have driven entities out of business altogether and have substantially weakened others, leaving their sustainability in doubt. The types of organizations threatened are not only businesses and corporations – they also range from governments to churches, political movements to politicians. Gone is the time when unethical practices could escape public scrutiny. An organization’s continuity and survival now depend upon sustaining highly positive and transparent relationships with all of its constituents, for example with its clients, customers, business partners and – increasingly, in many cases – the entire general public. As such, unethical activity entirely threatens organizational sustainability.

Conversely, it is also proving true that positive ethical behavior strengthens it. Today’s leaders face the task to fully understand, practice, share and demonstrate that their organization possesses and practices positive ethics and trustworthiness.

An ethical misconduct disaster is comparable to an environmental disaster, such as an oil spill. There is first the vulnerability that it could happen, perhaps due to poor processes or controls. Once the accident occurs, the impact is devastating: pollution and its aftermath follow. The impact of a reputation damaged by ethical misconduct is as sudden and severe. The life blood of survival drains, as clients, customers and former followers take their business, loyalty or interest elsewhere.

This presentation explores types of recent ethical misconduct disasters and their devastating results, costing businesses billions of dollars, landing senior management in prison, and robbing millions of workers of their jobs. It outlines what causes this vulnerability and describes a different, emerging “survival of the fittest” rule in the business world and other arenas: To sustain in an increasingly globally connected world, not only are positive brand images and consumer relationships imperative; it is now also true that only those organizations possessing sustainable values and behaviors (those which are most ethical) will ultimately survive.

Abstract Whether due to the awareness of clients, investors or critical media-businesses are increasingly confronted with the question of how they can respect human rights when carrying out their business activities. Human rights issues are not only significant in the international political arena and for public awareness, but are also becoming increasingly important in corporate governance and business management.

For many businesses in the tourist industry, it no longer matters whether but rather how they address their human rights responsibility. Obvious incentives such as motivated staff, fair business relations, and respect for the local population are indispensable for the creation of quality tourism products. Tourism that aggravates the competition for scarce resources – such as water, food, and land –, that creates exploitive labour conditions, or ignores the needs of the local population will not remain profitable for long. For destinations that are prone to corruption, or that lack official regulation, conformity with internationally agreed legal standards is an essential prerequisite for lasting and successful business activities.

Since tour operators depend on a variety of service providers for their tourism products – for example, for transport, tour guides, accommodation or catering – it is not always easy for them to assess the full impact of their business activities.

Moreover, they are active in many different places where the legal prerequisites, local culture, and ecological standards vary significantly.

The input will present concrete cases of Human Right violations in tourism, but also discuss the potential positive impacts of tourism development. Demand for action will be put both on tourists and tourism businesses but also onto governments and destination management.
