As Management and Staff of Shalom Manor, we are glad you have decided to become a volunteer at Shalom Manor. Shalom Manor highly values the services rendered by volunteers. As a volunteer, you are an integral part of Shalom Manor, assisting staff to fulfill its mission to provide holistic “gentle” care to those we serve. The contributions of our volunteers are a major factor in making our home the special place it is for the residents.

We encourage you to use your God given talents and gifts to their full potential.

This handbook outlines basic information about services at Shalom Manor. Please feel free to ask questions to clarify details. If at any time you need to refer to a specific policy or procedure, you will find policies in my office. Thank you for caring about our residents and sharing your gifts with them.

Shalom Manor is a unique community. As a Christian Long Term Care Home, we have developed a philosophy of care which gives our residents an opportunity to live out the fullness of their lives in dignity and in peace.

Shalom Manor serves residents, mostly of Dutch descent, in the Golden Horseshoe area of South-Western Ontario.

Shalom Manor exists solely for the purpose of caring for people who, whether by choice or circumstance, wish to participate in the fellowship and family that calls Shalom Manor home. A bilingual staff establishes a familiar environment for Dutch-Canadian residents.

Cultural elements such as decor, food (oliebollen), horticulture, games, and traditional Theme Days, such as "Sinterklaas",and "Hollandse Dag", create a community that eases the transition of moving to a long term care home and enhances the quality of life for residents.

Shalom Manor History

Shalom Manor was incorporated in 1966 by the deacons of Classis Hamilton of the Christian Reformed Churches in the Hamilton-Niagara region, as "Classis Hamilton Homes for the Aged, Inc.", operating as "Shalom Manor", with the mandate to operate on a non-profit basis, a home for the elderly members of the Christian Reformed Churches, to provide total care for the residents of this home within the limits of the resources available. Significant developments since the time of

incorporation include:

 the opening in 1979 of the 74 bed Home for the Aged, with private financing, without assistance from the government;





 the addition of a new dining room in 1981;

 a two-story addition in 1983, which increased the capacity by 28 beds to 102 beds;

 recognition in 1984, by the Ministry of Community and Social Services as a bona fide Home for the Aged;

 limited government funding assistance toward operating expenses in 1986;

 approval for an additional 30 ethnic nursing care beds in 1990 which were privately funded without government assistance;

 completion of the nursing wing in 1992, bringing the capacity to 132 beds in 78 private rooms and 28 semi-private rooms; (we were two facilities in one building: a Home for the Aged and a Nursing Home);

 becoming one facility in 1996, a Home for the Aged with 132 beds.

The Mission of Shalom Manor is to:

 operate Christian, Dutch-Canadian, non-profit long term care home and assisted living retirement apartments, in conjunction with its member churches and government agencies;

 provide a full continuum of *gentle care*, with dignity and respect to members of the Reformed and other Christian churches, being sensitivity to the varying needs of the cognitively impaired;

• provide a Christian and cultural environment which meets the spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs of our residents for optimum quality of life, recognizing the variety of cognitive needs of residents.

(“gentle care is the delivery of care and services to residents which promotes the highest degree of respect, patience, flexibility, compassion and optimism toward the individual and her/his family.”)

Shalom Manor will be a visibly responsible leader in not-for-profit care by providing exceptional quality of care and quality of life which are resident focused, and which are based on a clear set of moral and Christian principles.

Philosophy of Care We believe, as a Christian community, in the value of Christian

principles for our daily lives, as found in the Word of God:

 Therefore, our care environment and programs are designed to encourage and demonstrate the knowledge and experience of these Christian principles. Working according to these principles we recognize and respect the culture, ethnicity, family traditions, community, language and spiritual beliefs of each individual.

We believe we are created in the image of God and that each

individual is unique and of infinite value:

 Therefore, the quality of our daily experiences should reflect Christlike compassion, dignity and respect for each individual.

We believe in a Christ-centred lifestyle and organization:

 Therefore, we strive to create a wholesome Christian atmosphere through worship and study programs, daily devotions and pastoral services.

We believe in the importance and value of qualified, content and

fulfilled staff:

 Therefore, we encourage ongoing education to all staff members, providing them with a safe and challenging environment, respectful of their needs and spiritual well-being.

We believe in the value of Christian stewardship:

 Therefore, we promote and support the concept of responsible management, providing quality care and services on a non-profit basis, in partnership with government and community programs and services, using our gifts and resources from God to their fullest potential.

The following basic rights of the residents living in the facility are the foundation of our services, policies and standards. Each resident has the

right to:

 be treated with courtesy and respect in a way that fully recognizes the resident's dignity and individuality and to be free from mental and physical abuse;

 be properly sheltered, fed, clothed, groomed and cared for in a manner consistent with his or her needs;

 be told who is responsible for and who is providing the resident's direct care;

 be afforded privacy in treatment and in caring for his or her personal needs;

 keep in his or her room and display personal possessions, pictures and furnishings in keeping with safety requirements and other residents' rights;

 be informed of his or her medical condition, treatment and proposed course of treatment;

 give or refuse consent to treatment, including medication, in accordance with the law and to be informed of the consequences of giving or refusing consent;

 have the opportunity to participate fully in making any decision and obtaining an independent medical opinion concerning any aspect of his or her care, including any decision concerning his or her admission, discharge or transfer to or from a nursing home;

 have his or her medical records kept confidential in accordance with the law;

 receive reactivation and assistance toward independence consistent with his or her requirements;

 be fully informed about the procedures and the consequences of receiving or refusing constraints;

 communicate in confidence, to receive visitors of his or her choice and to consult in private with any person without interference;

 have members of his/her family present 24 hours per day, when death is imminent;

 designate a person to receive information concerning any transfer or emergency hospitalization of the resident and where a person is so designated to have that person so informed forthwith;

 exercise the rights of a citizen and to raise concerns or recommend changes in policies and services on behalf of himself or herself or others to the Residents' Council, Shalom Manor &Gardens staff, government officials or any other person inside or outside Shalom Manor & Gardens, without fear of restraint, interference, coercion, discrimination or reprisal;

 form friendships, to enjoy relationships and to participate in the residents' council;

 meet privately with his or her spouse in a room that assures privacy and where both spouses are residents in Shalom Manor & Gardens, to share a room according to their wishes, if an appropriate room is available;

 pursue social, cultural, religious and other interests to develop his or her potential and to be given reasonable provisions by Shalom Manor & Gardens to accommodate these pursuits;

 be informed in writing of any law, rule or policy affecting the operation of Shalom Manor & Gardens and of the procedures for initiating complaints;

 manage his or her own financial affairs where the resident is able to do so, and where the resident's financial affairs are managed by Shalom Manor & Gardens, to receive a quarterly accounting of any transactions undertaken on his or her behalf and to be assured that the resident's property is managed solely on the resident's behalf;

 live in a safe and clean environment;

 be given access to protected areas outside Shalom Manor & Gardens in order to enjoy outdoor activity, unless the physical setting makes this impossible.

Volunteer Program Principles

Believing that volunteers enhance the quality of life for both the resident

and the community, Shalom Manor & Gardens:

 welcomes and values the involvement of volunteers in all of its programs and activities;

 advocates that volunteers are an integral component of the care giving team;

 believes that volunteers form an important link between the community and the residents;

 provides interviewing, screening, orientation training, and suitable placement for its volunteers;

 invites volunteers to participate in whatever staff in-service education and training is helpful to them;

 offers on-going recognition of the services provided by the volunteers;

 welcomes feedback from volunteers which is helpful to resident care;

 believes that happy volunteers help create a positive public image of the organization.

 The Board of Directors and the Management team of Shalom Manor, believe that health and safety and the prevention of accidents to staff, residents, volunteers, contracted employers and visitors is important to all phases of the Manor’s operation. It is the responsibility of all employees, volunteers and all persons on Shalom Manor’s property to take reasonable and necessary precautions to ensure their own personal health and safety, as well as the health and safety of others.
